Like all scams, wedding dress scammers prey on the naïve and uneducated. Don’t let yourself fall into this category. Know how to spot a scam and how you can easily avoid one.

Have you ever thought about whether or not you needed to worry about getting scammed on your wedding dress purchase? If not, you should. While it only happens to a handful of brides, those brides are often devastated and have many pieces to pick up after being scammed. This applies no matter what the cost of the dress, and regardless of whether or not you receive a dress that didn’t meet your expectations. You might just end up with no dress at all. Thankfully, if you’re careful and educated, there are things that you can do to avoid getting scammed on your wedding dress purchase.

Choose Only Reputable Sources

Most bridal shops, boutiques, and thrift stores are pretty upfront about their prices and what is included with that price, so getting scammed on your wedding dress purchase through these sources is less likely than others, like on-line auctions. However, it is possible to end up not receiving the extras you thought came with the purchase of your dress if you don’t follow these remaining tips for how to avoid getting scammed on your wedding dress purchase. Additionally, on-line sites and auctions can still be reliable sources to purchase your wedding dress, if you know what to look out for.

Ask Away

Another important thing to remember when trying to avoid getting scammed on your wedding dress purchase is that this is your wedding, and your money. Don’t allow the person selling the dress to intimidate you or skirt around your questions. If at any time you feel uncomfortable or feel that the person selling you the dress is being dishonest, look elsewhere for your gown.

Get it in Writing

No matter where you purchase your wedding dress, having the specifics and details in writing is essential to not getting scammed on your wedding dress purchase. The write-up should include the condition of the dress (new or used), whether or not there are any issues with the dress if used, the price of the dress, and what additional services may be covered in the dress purchase (alterations, etc.). All of these areas are common areas that can be scammed, which is why they are important to have in writing to avoid getting scammed on your wedding dress purchase.
